What is Compounding?

Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing personalized medications for patients. Compounded medications are made based on a physician’s prescription in which individual ingredients are mixed together in the exact strength and dosage form required by the patient. This method allows the compounding pharmacist to work closely with the patient and the prescriber to customize a medication to meet the patient’s specific needs.

Quality

Independent laboratory testing – Our pharmacy routinely validates our procedures and preparations with independent laboratory testing to ensure sterility and potency. Our comprehensive quality program ensures your patients receive preparations that meet USP 795 + 797 requirements.

At Cottrill’s, we will not compromise on quality because patients’ lives may depend on it.

We use only the very highest quality ingredients from companies such as PCCA (Professional Compounding Centers of America). PCCA does 14 quality checks on every ingredient that it ships out to insure its’ quality and potency.

Any ingredient that does not pass all of these quality tests will be rejected.

Benefits of Compounding

Compounding Pharmacists Make Medication

That Is Difficult to Find or Discontinued

Sometimes pharmaceutical companies discontinue a medication. This happens because not enough patients are taking the drug, so it is unprofitable to keep mass-producing it. A compounding pharmacist can re-create that medication by compounding it, so even if only one person still needs that medication, they will have access to it.

Compounding Pharmacists Make Medication Allergy-Friendly

A patient may be allergic to or intolerant of an ingredient commonly found in the commercially manufactured form of a medication. A compounding pharmacist can create a personalized medication, formulated to give the patient the treatment they need while leaving out the problematic ingredient.

Ingredients that may cause allergies include:

Dyes

Gluten

Lactose

Preservatives

Sugar

Compounding Pharmacists Make Medication Easier to Use

Some medications do not taste good, which makes the patient less likely to take it as directed. A compoun- ding pharmacist can flavor a medication to make it more palatable without compromising the medication’s effectiveness. This is especially useful when dealing with medications for patients who may refuse medication, such as young children, elderly patients, or even pets.

A patient may need their medication in a different dosage form. For example, patients who have difficulty swallowing a pill or capsule may find it easier to take their medication in a flavored liquid form. Some medications can be compounded in a topical form such as a cream or a gel that allows the medicine to be absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin.

Cottrill’s Pharmacy Can:

Adjust the strength or dosage of a medication

Flavor a medication, to make it more palatable

Reformulate the drug to exclude an unwanted nonessential ingredient such as gluten, or a dye that a patient is allergic to

Change the form of the medication for patients who have difficulty swallowing or experience nausea when taking oral medication

Put drugs into specially flavored liquids, topical creams, suppositories, or troches

Help you if your chosen drug is no longer commercially available

Combine various compatible medications into a single dosage form for easier administration and improved compliance
